Why are immunizations important?

As soon as your child is born, they'll receive their first immunizations. These shots work by preparing their body's immune system for future exposure to disease-causing viruses or bacteria. This helps keep your child safe and enables their growing body to fight off illnesses.

Immunizations are a convenient preventive measure that helps avoid the anxiety and costly, extensive doctor or hospital visits that could occur if your child contracts a disease. They also help your child avoid any long-term complications of a disease or infection.

Getting your child immunized also helps the community. When your child is healthy, it protects other children who aren't able to receive vaccines or immunizations.

When should my child receive immunizations?

Your child should get their first doses of most vaccines during their first two years of life. You can expect your baby to receive as many as 10 different types of vaccines by 15 months.

The CDC recommends children receive their first dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine when they turn one or shortly after. Your child should receive a second dose before they enter elementary school (between the ages of 4-6).

Up until your child is six years old, you can expect to visit your pediatrician at Fairway Children's Medical Group at least once a year to maintain their immunization schedule and wellness checkups.

Your child can continue to receive a flu shot once a year and a tetanus shot every 10 years. They may not complete their immunization schedule until they're 16.

Your child may need multiple doses of certain vaccines for full protection.

Although most immunization side effects are minimal, let your pediatrician know if your child experiences any adverse reactions. If your baby is sick, your provider may recommend avoiding or rescheduling an immunization.
